Brookview is home to the largest lawn bowling green in Minnesota! Similar to bocce ball, lawn bowling is played on a large, rectangular green divided into parallel playing strips. Players use bowls (weighted ball-like objects with flattened sides) and a jack (a small white ball). The object of the game is simple: roll your bowl as close to the jack as possible. This fun and relaxing sport is perfect for all ages!

How to Play

To play, the jack is rolled onto the rink and must travel at least halfway across the rink. Players then take turns trying to roll their bowls as close to the jack as possible. Points are awarded at the end of each round to the team whose bowl (or bowls) is closest to the jack. Players alternate the direction of play after each round. The first team to reach 21 points is the winner.

Some rules to remember:

  • Only flat-soled shoes, socks, or bare feet are allowed on the green.
  • Only the active bowler is allowed on the green.
  • The jack and bowls must be rolled, never tossed or dropped. Don’t be a tosser!
  • It’s fun (and permissible) to strike the other players’ bowls with your own to gain a strategic advantage!
